Wow! Sonic games have certainly moved on since I last played them, with a little blue spinning things picking up gold rings. I think I'll have to give this game a whirl!
If you want to play a Sonic game with a good storyline, I'd actually suggest one of the two 'Sonic Adventure' games. Sonic Adventure 1 is available on digital download on X-Box live and the PSN.
The Sonic 06 storyline is interesting, but notice my remarks about the gameplay being 'glitchy to the point of unplayability'
