In which Max has to decide on a language.

So, I pretty much need to know a second language. I am currently looking into taking either German classes or Spanish classes; the difference being that I had about 5 years of spanish from middle and high school. I have a basic understanding of spanish but I've forgotten a lot of it. I can basically read spanish on the subway and infer a lot of ( Read more... )

Learn whatever makes you happy. Russian isn't useful at all, but my interest in Russian culture makes it fulfilling for me.

well actually Russian would probably be the most useful, considering my larger focus is Cold War history.

I agree... go with a language you can be passionate about. Sometimes that means a new one -- just don't confuse the interest that comes with freshness with true passion, as initial interest can fade. Find whatever is interesting to you and go for it! My advice is to agree with yourself to pay more for a subject that you will end up loving more.

Oh, and of course consider countries you might like to go to. Be honest with yourself and think about which really excite you.

Also, I recommend language learning tapes. They help with pronunciation and can be listened to on the way to things (thanks to ipods).
