She was of an age to seek a wife, and so she had courted, but she knew that this would never be accepted. So.. she started as a male, but was changed into a female? or..?

The bard had been born human and male, but was made female and fey through the attentions of a pagan fertility deity. Considering the memories of her male past, through the lens of her female identity, was intended to cause some confusion.

...on the other hand, setting out to confuse the reader isn't a terribly helpful approach. Sorry about that.
