My Relationship with Emoticons

I have a complicated, sometimes stormy, relationship with emoticons.

I go through emoticon phases, really. This is because intellectually I believe that one ought be able to communicate one's intended message, complete with its emotional connotations, using actual words only. So whenever I have the mental nebula that coalesces as one reads a comment

Haha, not in terms of denotations, I guess, but in terms of connotations...to me it's a matter of presenting as pleased rather than over-medicated.
