I've heard that elk choose to give birth near highways because the cars frighten off wolves.

Your experience mostly matches my own, but around here the white-tailed deer have gotten so accustomed to humans they aren't anywhere near as skittish as they are most places. It's really annoying when they're in our yard eating our plants and you need to actually chase them to get them to leave; other places I've lived just setting foot out the door would send them fleeing.
