The fabulous writer and person Judith Tarr has been facilitating a read of Katherine Kurtz’s Deryni novels, first published in 1970s. Tarr also wrote this great post on her discovery of Kurtz’s work, and its impact on opening up her own writing directions.

:) This is fantastic. I wish I had come to Kurtz in publication order; I started with the Camber trilogy, which are good but mostly interesting in light of the Kelson books. (I do remember enjoying the psychic space cats in The Legacy of Lehr.) But yes, "humans fear what they don't understand" and "fearful people reaching out to understand" are very much the two sides of her work that I recall.

(also: "Lammas Night." Although I would totally read Llama's Night.)

ROFLMAO! I can't believe I did that TWICE. And it's a good thing I feel like laughing at myself tonight. :))

I understand what you mean about reading in publication order. To me, the Camber trilogy have a very different edge--not greater or smaller, but different. And the context is indeed different depending on reading order.

And I haven't thought about Lehr in ages!
