This is a rite of passage for drivers. Everybody has their first minor, and eventually their first moderate bump - it sucks, but sooner or later it will happen. He didn't do anything wrong; by what you say he reacted exactly right, and having put my own car through a pothole last winter (just where you turn off a major road, no way to swerve) I wince in sympathy.
