Teresa Teng

Though sometimes I complain about the disadvantages of being a white fan of MandoPop, sometimes there are advantages.  The usual disadvantages are that I've only been listening to Chinese music for a bit less than 2 years, I don't have any relatives who will buy CDs for me, I haven't gotten to go to Asia, and my parents don't care for Chinese music at all.  Actually, in some ways, the last reason works in my favor.  How?  Many Chinese-speaking children have parents who listened to classics like Teresa Teng.  When you grow up listening to someone, it may make listening to that artist more nostalgic, but it's no longer "in" to listen to someone who died in the 90s.  As few Chinese stores I have been too (maybe 3?), I've been to one already that had nothing but Teresa Teng songs over the speakers.  They were in Cantonese, though, so not really the ones I recognize easily.  (Incidentally, one of the other stores I went to had Jay Chou's "开不了口" playing, which made my day, even though the store owner didn't know who Jay was.)

Aww, I'm getting nostalgic myself!  No matter.  Even though Teresa's "甜蜜蜜" ("Tian Mi Mi") is the second Mandarin song I remember hearing, her songs are still shiny and new compared to how they must be for the Chinese.  On the whole, her songs are actually newer to me than Jay's.  I bought a collection of her songs earlier this year.  It's DSD-CD, which I wasn't expecting and wasn't prepared for, so not all of the songs are perfect.  Still, this is great for anyone new to Teresa's songs.  I posted links earlier on cpop, I'm just now posting the tracklist:

DISC 1
01. 月亮代表我的心 - Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin (This is a classic!  David Tao's version, "月亮代表谁的心"/"Yue Liang Dai Biao Shei De Xin," is also very good.)
Xiao Cheng Gu Shi (Jane Zhang included a rendition of this song in her "I Love Teresa Teng album")
Wo Zhi Zai Hu Ni (Sodagreen has recorded a live cover of this song, as well as Jane.)
04. 你怎麼說 - Ni Zen Me Shuo (Also on Jane's album, Jay Chou has sung this live, but didn't release an official recording.  If you want it very badly, I do have a low-quality recording someone took in a concert here.)
Jiu Zui De Tan Ge
Chang Huan
He Ri Jun Zai Lai
Ya Lai Xiang (David Tao has covered this, and also Chicken Rice.)
Nan Wang Chu Liang De Qing Ren
Zai Shui Yi Fang
Chuan Ge
Dan Yuan Ren Chang Jiu (Jane covered this.)

Nan Hai Gu Niang
16. 我和你 - Wo He Ni
Qia Si Ni De Wen Rou
Tian Mi Mi (Also on Jane's album, and Machi's version is pretty cool, too.)

DISC 2
A Li Shan De Gu Niang (Folk song, you can hear Alan's live rendition here.)
Ai De Zhen Yuan
Bu Zhao Hen Ji
Huang Hun Li
Yi Feng Qing Shu
Ru Guo Mei You Ni
Wo Zen Neng Li Kai Ni
Xiang Ni Xiang Duan Chang

Zai Lai Yi Bei
Yi Ge Xiao Xin Yuan
Jiu Meng He Chu Xun
There should have been a 19th track, but that one wouldn't rip right.

DISC 3
01. 不了情 - Bu Liao Qing (Try David Tao's "忘不了"/"Wang Bu Liao," too.)
Qing Ye You You
Wang Bu Liao (No relation to the David Tao song.)
Fang Cao Wu Qing
Xiao Chuang Xiang Si
San Nian
Wang Ye Qian Sheng
Qing Se De Hui Yi
Qian Sheng You Yuan
Ni Zhao Liang Wo De Xin
Qing Hu
Shao Nian Ai Gu Niang
Yun Shen Qing Ye Shen
Shi Ai Qing Geng Mei Li
Shi Fou
Chu Lian De Di Fang
Bei Guo Zhi Chun (Japanese)
Si Jun
19. 星願 - Xing Yuan (I'm not sure why I have this one labeled the way I have it on the tags.  It's partly because it's Traditional Chinese, and maybe also because of the Fujian accent I've been hearing lately?)

If I listed all the ones covered by Fei Yu Qing (with whom Jay sings "千里之外"/"Faraway," in case anyone doesn't recognize the name) and Faye Wong, that'd take forever, so I just listed some more recent covers.

I also can't end this entry without posting this beautiful Taiwanese song.  David Tao included it on his first album, with Mandarin added in, and Jay Chou also sang this a capella with his own Mandarin add-ins for his grandma in his "The One" concert.  (It wasn't one of Jay's best performances by far, but I'd still be proud if I were his waipo.)  It's called "望春风," and you can actually find the lyrics on Wikipedia.  (Not necessarily the best translation, but a translation nonetheless.)  Here's Teresa Teng's version, with Romanized Hokkien subtitles in case you feel the urge to sing along:

On a more personal note, I'm missing some skin where part of my right eyebrow used to be.  Next time I want to get my eyebrows plucked, I'm going to my hairdresser!  This wasn't even cheap (Why does the place in Wal-Mart charge $10 for that?!), and it itches 4 days later.  I got this done because I'm getting new glasses, which will be smaller, so my eyebrows won't be hidden, especially now that I'm brushing my bangs to the side Jay Chou-style.  (They hit a certain length and I don't brush them straight down until I get another haircut.)
