A twinge of compassion threaded through Joss then, the niggling sense that this woman before her was in trouble somehow. Was Crystal, for all her combative bluster and deadly gunplay, under siege

Hm, interesting fatalism Crystal has going on. Not surprising, given her history. Fatalism plus heroism plus getting tangled up with all the wrong people... what a mess. I like the resolution you gave her in this.
Overprotective John has just been activated, though, and I don't see that going well for Carter and Reese.
This was a great read: tense, constantly shifting, and with flashes of humor. I enjoyed it a lot.
Thank you for reading and commenting. I always benefit from your insights into these stories and characters. I wanted to put these people (plus that darned machine) into a tight box and let the consequences tumble out. I thought that given her background, Crystal's fatalism should mirror the comments from Dominic about how we are all going to die in the end. I wanted her to have a sardonic chatterbox voice in contrast to the buttoned-up usual from our laconic heroes.
And yes, John is in protective mode and on high alert, reversing his earlier plea to "stay" as he tries to figure a way to keep Joss, Crystal, and the baby safe.
Another great, tension-filled story! It's wonderful to see how fluidly John and Joss work together as a team even during such a trying situation. The way they can read each other to such an extent that they can tell what the other is thinking, as Carter, in particular, proved both during and after the hostage situation, was perfect. I love how vital a role non-verbal communication plays in this relationship!
I'm so glad you enjoyed this story! And yes, in my view, Reese and Carter do work well together as a closely honed unit. It makes sense to me that at this stage in their maturing relationship, the gears grind smoothly and they read each other's needs and moods quite well. Even Crystal, who has been spying on them for several months, senses they are a capable team, which is why she brought her proposal to both of them together. Thank you for your attention and support, it's much appreciated!
