I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I wanted to take Reese through a roller coaster of emotions and then finally bring him right back to Joss, exactly where the story began. Thank you for your thoughtful comments as you progressed through the story.

oops... so many mistakes... the WORD* love, and the QUOTE* Joan made about him seeing Joss and her being his special girl.
(can't wait for when he finds that right time to let her know that that is what she is - even if he has already, just without those specific words (or words at all in certain cases...)) -Joyjoy

Thank you for your generous comments about this story. I always enjoy delving into readers' reactions as they help me understand my story better. And plan for future stories too! Among his many qualities (sensitive, paranoid, empathetic, tough, sensual, sardonic, disappointed romantic)I think that Reese is superstitious. He is afraid that by stating out loud what he feels for Carter he will somehow botch it up. His experience is that if he gets too close and too upfront with his emotional needs, they will turn around and bite him in the most devastating way. So he keeps his mouth shut and lets his actions do the talking as far as telling Joss what he feels about her. He trusts her to understand him.
I am glad that you enjoyed this winding rollercoaster of a case fic and that you took time to post your comments.
Aw, poor Reese! His job is not only physically demanding but continues to be emotionally taxing, too! At least spending time with a sympathetic listener like Badge allowed him to express some of the emotions he keeps so tightly under wraps around Joss. I especially appreciated learning about how The Wind in the Willows holds a special meaning for him and, more importantly, about his experience being a slow reader in school and how he dealt with it

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I always enjoy hearing from you.
Yes, Reese is taxed to the limit by his work. But the human and emotional connections he makes are important to him and his well-being, I think. Badge's innate optimism and openness struck a chord in him, provoking all kinds of thoughts: memories of his own challenges growing up, his desires for a child --specifically a daughter -- of his own, his perceptions of the limitations on his relationship with Joss. Lots of chagrin to go around. Badge being so frank in her gratitude made all the difference to Reese; he doesn't get thanked much in his line of work. She served as a nice foil to the elderly Joan too.
Of course, I got a huge kick out of bringing Elias back for a guest appearance. He is my go-to guy for evil and insight, LOL!
