Things carried

I'm putting together a list of things that I will likely need to bring so I can keep my head straight related to all this goofiness. The target location is southern Texas in early August, which is apparently "fry an egg on your forehead" hot. If you have suggestions, shout 'em out ( Read more... )

Consider the following, tablet form when possible---

-Some kind of painkiller (tablets)--Advil or Alleve recommended (check the dosage)
-Imodium (tablets) (handles lower GI problems) (for the nasties that bring on Montezuma's revenge)
-Tagamet (or cymetadine) (tablets) (handles upper GI problems) for upset stomachs when the volunteer food has been sitting in the sun too long

Other things to consider--
-Mosquito repellent--high DEET levels
-Some kind of anti-itch cream or spray (Benedryl or ???) (for those Texas mosquitoes that eat DEET for lunch!!)
-Sunscreen that handles both UVA and UVB
-Band-Aids
-Neosporine or some sort of anti-bacterial cream

Speaking as someone in Texas, it's even hotter than that. Make sure to stay ridiculously well hydrated.

Too bad you're not coming to Texas under more pleasant circumstances.

decongestant of your choice, even if you don't believe yourself to have allergies. lots of rain usually leads to lots of mold/etc in very short order.

The latest recommendation from dermatologists at the major med centers is sunscreen that is PABA-free and contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, which do the best job of blocking UVA rays. Just blocking UVB rays isn't enough. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended. You can get some sunglasses with good protection now at Walgreens/CVS for $20/pair that completely cover your glasses, protect your eyes from all angles and look pretty decent. They come in brown and green tones.
