Oh, I think, you haven't seen good movies based on books. I read 'Bridgit Jones Diary' (sorry if I made a mistake in the name of book, I read it in Russian and don't know correct english name) and then I watched the movie, Both were amazing! Film added new scenes, which made whole film more completed.. Of course, most of movies fail, but the main reason is that films are based on books, but film directors make a lot of changes in the scenery.. Russian films, which were made in the USSR are great! They are fully based on books and repeat every single word! They were very helpful when I learned at school - I watched films and haven't read books, which were not interesting for me.. =)
Maybe, but I stand by what I said. I don't care how a movie follows a book word for word, nothing could ever compare to the book. The book was made so perfectly and the detail is so much better. And it is not possible for a book to repeat like you said unless there is a constant narration describing what the person looks like and what they are wearing and where they are. And I am almost positive no movie does that. I could be wrong, but not likely. They may add the visual but its not the same when you read it, and if you don't like to read, which apparently you do not if you choose to watch a movie instead of reading the book, then you would not understand. The book carries a different meaning and a different perspective and gives you more understanding. And the reason most movies fail, is because it is someone taking what a completely different person wrote and trying to put their mark on it and like said before a film can not recreate what a book has made. Movies paraphrase.
Well, I agree with most of what you said. I am keen on reading, but few books from school programm were very difficult for me, cause I don't like books about war and Russian author Lev Tolstoi paid too much attention to war problems...So I decided to watch movie instead of reading. And if we speak about everydaylife, I firstly read book and only after I go to the cinema to compare. It's strange and not correctly to compare films and books, cause our imagination is much more vivid that film, where director should put everything oi 80 minutes. So, we shouldn't compare these 2 spheres - literature and cinema. Now I'm reading Thomas Mann (The Buddenbrocks) and I want to watch the movie, cause I want to see how the director of a film sees every hero. =) I think, you're right -'The book carries a different meaning and a different perspective and gives you more understanding.'
