Aaawww! What a great story! I love animal rescue stories, and with birds it doesn't always turn out so well. Thank you for the pictures, too!

Yeah, the first thing I tried was putting a tree branch and a rake into the hole, resting diagonally so that the bird might climb on and scoot upward to safety. I left those there for over an hour, until it was clear the bird had no idea it could do that. The towel trick was my last resort. Because, while it was fun for me to scoop up a crow-in-a-blanket, I knew it wouldn't be fun at all for the crow!

It didn't think so, but yeah. It had been trapped for a while, judging by the number of droppings in the bottom of the window well and the marks it made on the outside of the glass.

Fortunately, I had experience with 1. chickens (no, really -- you cover their heads and they kind of trance out) and 2. using a piece of black velvet to get a woodpecker out of my house without it or me getting hurt.
