Yeah, I'm thinking that Sam killing Lilith is possibly a part of YED's plans, or at the very least was always a possibility on the table (i.e. substitute Lilith's name with any other demon who might rise and oppose Azazel

Yep, I'm right there with ya. It's looking more and more like Lilith's death is the final seal and Sam is the one intended to do it.
It's like both Heaven and Hell has worked to put Sam in a situation in which protecting Dean means he has to kill Lilith. Dean is identified by Heaven as the means of preventing the Apocalypse, but Sam sees him as not up to the task and so at risk if he tries. Hell claimed Dean and, for all anyone knows, Dean dies and he goes straight back to Hell cause there's been no talk about Lilith not owning Dean's soul anymore.
