I like your thinky thoughts... I must rewatch episode to catch some things you brought up like the whole thing with Sam and you not showing pain and all that... *ponders* interesting :)

21 times he got punched in the face - and that was AFTER the guy sat on his bruised nads - from when the girl stabbed him in the lung with a protractor compass needle.

But I love reading your thinky thoughts, and I hope my brain comes back from England at some point, because I'm starting to miss it ....

Though I do like this: I am starting to see all the ways that Sam was taking care of Dean, too.
Yes. Even though this ep showed us Big Brother-Little Brother, it's clear they are much closer to equals than we'd think. Dean is ready to commit murder and mayhem to protect Sammy, but we see clearly that he not only expects Sam to fight for himself, he respects Sam's ability to do so. When Dean *does* go mother-hennish (got your lunch? got your homework? got your butterfly knife?) Sam simply accepts it as Dean's way, because Sam knows Dean is not denying Sam's self-sufficiency. Very nicely turning a lot of fandom convention on its ear. ;-)

And that's all the thinky I got. Except that wee!Sam had just as scary and volcanic a temper then as now, under the sweet, baby-faced exterior ....
