Well WTF. So first there's a five year plan, then it turned into a four season plan, and now it might go beyond that? Jeez.

"If fandom is powerful in a good way, it's also capable of being powerful in the wrong way."

Next time, we should pick a presidential nominee and back him/her. I swear whoever fandom picked would win. It's that insanely powerful sometimes.

I think what they're saying is that it was intended to have the show go four seasons. (That's the number of seasons where you get syndication: sell to other venues and make your money back.) And that is how long it was going to take to tell the story that Kripke wanted to tell.

With the writer's strike happening during season 3, it looked like that 4 season story was going to get truncated. They were going to leave things out and revamp for those 6 lost episodes, still planning to go four seasons. Kripke by then (I GUESS) was campaigning online for 5 seasons so that he could get that time back. (That would explain why we heard about five seasons online, to gauge fan reaction, but the show peeps in Van were pretty much in the dark about it.)

NOW they've got the greenlight for five full seasons, those six episodes plus 16 more. So yay HAPPY and yet arg FACEPALM about how to stretch it all back out.

\0?

So... I guess if fandom craziness helped get that fifth season? Then YAY, GO US.

Oh, don't get me wrong! I am thrilled about any extra SPN we get! So long as it doesn't...suck balls...and you're right, if fandom crazy is to blame? Hooray! It just gets so confusing keeping track of how long they were actually planning on having the show run for lol.

AND people have talked about a movie. REALLY? Should they plan that now, so they can leave the ending open, and save the really badass stuff for that? Because while I would probably do embarrassing things to express my joy over a movie, I don't want them to have to stretch stuff out even further. Am I even making sense right now??

Oh, American Gods! Because I live an hour away from House on the Rock, aaaaall my friends wanted to visit it when they visited me. Three visits to that insane funhouse was *more* than enough, but it was fun to put it in one of my stories. ;->

I hope you feel better forthwith and stuff.

Rogue, the metaphors. They are EATING MY BRAIN. That book was attached to my person by the time I had two chapters left to read. I was dragging it with me everywhere. My family was like, "are you going to eat with us, or stare at that book?" It was a HARD CHOICE. LOL

Yes, even the NAME of the "House on the Rock" and what it represents and just AAAAAAAAAAAAHHH.

TY, BB. I can't wait to feel better.

I guess I can't really agree with you about #4. For instance, I'm a big fan of Bruce Campbell, and I'm pretty sure it was due to his fan following that Bubbahotep got released to video. He did a lot of touring to support the film with screenings and big fan crowds and so eventually the film came out. If Ten Inch Hero comes out after all this time I think the internet support is to a large extent to thank.

I love that they don't know where the Priestly doll came from (plastic winchesters is where)!

Also, I read a couple stories that were reccd on Unfit for Society Reccs, which I love, that were Priestly stories from Yuletide -- the stories totally addressed the problems I'd heard about the film and renewed my interest in buying it when it's released. And yes, I own a real DVD of Devour, and Yes, I sold back my House of Wax!! :)

My plastic winchesters, above, not the real ones by Anteka! I don't have a Priestly---yet!

Actually, I think we do agree... blacklid January 15 2009, 20:20:36 UTC
In my view, there's a big difference between fans making illegal downloads of FULL copies of a movie and fans attending a screening setup by the creator. Yes, both helped in the end, but if fans wanted to help in a way that truly contributed to the bottom line of a film, wouldn't they work to setup screenings and other free media in cooperation with the creators? Intention doesn't get around the real problem. People may feel obligated to buy it, but if they already have a full download, who's to say if they ever actually get around to actually buying it outright? Nobody would be able to track that statistic, so you can't use that to prove one approach over the other. It's the catch-22 of creative business: you have to be able to measure the value of your art.

With things like PWT and the Priestly dolls and fan fiction... those things are obvious recreations of copyrighted material for the purpose of interpretation/farce. It's indirect promotion and that's usually looked upon as a good thing by creators, so I have no problem with it ( ... )
