Why solar/wind power might be bad for the environment if not done properly.

This afternoon I was overhearing my Dad (who is a plant ecologist who specializes in desert ecology--specifically Mojave desert) talk to one of his old ecologist friends (another Californian) about the current Mojave desert renewable energy plan problem.

one of the problems with Americans is that they seem to conflate democracy and market capitalism

That's not only a problem in America, unfortunately. :-(

Great post!

With every passing day, I hate capitalism more and more. And the Puritan 'work and be miserable until you're dead because that is what being a good person means' bs.

Argh.

Very interesting. As an aspiring engineer, I find the energy problem an important issue. This really seems like an idea that should be explored. Many people don't seem to realise ecology is as important as technolgy or financial issues. The desire for profit appears to create so many problems.

Yes, the way Capitalism is equated to Democracy is sad, since they are very different concepts. I can't imagine how some people have fixated upon the idea that Socialism means the end of democracy. Actually, capitalism as it is now even seems to hamper democracy, while there are so many good and useful aspects of socialism.

Americans actully seem to despise socialism just because it's socialism, without even trying to understand what it's all about. (It's the impression American media gives to me.)

Awhile back some companies were offering something like a 50% discounts to put solar panels in. Dad considered doing it, but for some reason he didn't. Not sure if they're still offering the incentive.

Solar panels stretched out over the wilderness can be owned by a corporation, and therefore the energy produced can be sold for profit, whereas a web of solar panels on private and public property could not be easily commodified.::gapes ( ... )
