Mako had decided to go have a swim to cut some stress on his shoulder. Swimming was the one thing Mako did, and liked doing. However, Mako couldn't believe that he could swim this straight for so far. It felt like an endless volume of water around him. Stopping to have a rest, Mako saw his demise: No land anywhere. Not contempt of thinking about it ( Read more... )

Mokuba had passed out in his own bed in a blissful post-Halloween sugar coma, so he was thoroughly startled to wake up with reeds in his face, and even more startled to find himself lying by the side of a wide river under a scorching hot sun, with no one else in sight.

So he did what came naturally in times of crisis: "SETO!"

There was no response. Panic began to set in, only to be derailed when an odd shape came floating lazily down the river toward him, then became caught in the reeds. Curious, Mokuba picked his way carefully toward it and realized that it was a body--specifically, Mako Tsunami's body.

If this was a nightmare, it was a very, very weird one.

Still in his own unconsciousness, Mako was still in the middle of the ocean, when he thought he heard something. A muffled scream. It sounded familiar but Mako ignored it, going back to his belief that he was in the middle of the ocean

Was Mako dead? Probably not, Mokuba supposed; he was floating face-up. For several seconds Mokuba struggled against the preteen boy instinct to poke him with a stick anyway, just in case.

The prospect of being all alone in an unfamiliar place was slightly worse than the prospect of being all alone save for the company of Mako Tsunami, so Mokuba, after a bit more dithering, grabbed the man by the arm and attempted to drag him ashore. It was slow work, and Mokuba ended up sweaty, exhausted, and caked in mud up to his knees by the time he'd pulled about half of Mako's upper body up into the mud. Good enough, he decided.

"Hey, freaky fish guy!" he shouted at the unmoving body. "C'mon, wake up!"

Ah. Mako felt like he was being dragged and also heard the three words that, in combination, Mako loathes the most. Somethings wrong, Mako thought. How can he hear voices if he's awake? Unless.

That was it. Mako wasn't awake. This was all in his mind. How long have I been like this? What's actually happened to me? But more importantly, how do I get out of my head?
