Re-Authorize Section 5 in 2007!

Q: Did you know that our right to vote will expire in the year 2007? Seriously! The Voters Rights Act signed in 1965 by Lyndon B. Johnson was just an ACT. It was not made a law. In 1982 Ronald Reagan amended the Voters Rights Act for only another 25 years. Which means that in the year 2007 we could lose the right to vote ( Read more... )

I think both political parties will use the extention of Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act as a nice photo-op for all party leaders, Pres. Bush and a very invited citizens.

My understanding is that the VRA prevents the poll taxes and tests and that sort of thing and once it expires states could bring those back.

As Ohio likes to make it very hard for black folks to vote I imagine they'll be the first to try it out if the VRA isn't extended.

Our right to vote is in the Constitution, I beleive the 14 or 13 amendment; not by that act.

That act put in protections to attempt to ensure the right wouldn't be abridged, but it doesn't grant the right so it won't expire whether that act expires or not.
