Boots and books

Jul 30, 2007 13:49

Snuck out out lunch time and came back with two pairs of boots! Result!

I also realised that it hasn't rained at all for the last four days, which must be something of a record for this summer.

And Clive James made me laugh in his article about J K Rowling envy when he said:

I personally don't read Harry Potter books because I was inoculated, very ( Read more... )

Generally I love fantasy fiction/films. However I was bitterly disappointed in the last film of "Lord of the Rings," too many false endings and I was totally confused at the end. Orlando Bloom looked very beautiful with all that long blonde hair though - it was worth watching it just for him ( ... )

Blimey, that was a post and a half, Catherine!

I've tried reading Dickens on several occasions over the years but I just find his style too turgid. I love watching the television adaptations of his work but sadly I just can't read his books.

How come your dreams of being a published writer were shattered?

Sorry, I rambled on a bit too much then :(

I should've said that I too can't settle down to read Dickens, but love the television adaptations. He is a very complicated writer and his descriptions sometimes lasted a page! I managed to read "A Christmas Carol" though.

Well I guessed from the moment I picked up "The Artists and Writers Yearbook" that I would never make it.

Publishing houses normally only take on work from authors who are presented by agents. Agents normally only take on authors who are already well established i.e. short stories or some sort of other avenue - that's why so many celebrities get published - they are easy to publicise.

Rejection letters! As well as having rejection letters for jobs I was getting another pile of rejection letters.

I even tried a writing school at one time, but failed at that as well!

My father always told me I wrote crap and the publishers agreed with him.

I gave up writing for a long time and then discovered the fantasy boards on the EE forum and began writing again.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you'd rambled on too much, babe! Ramble as much as you like. I know I do. ;-)

After talent, I think persistence is the key to ordinary people like you and me trying to get published. It annoys me that book deals are thrown at the likes of Jordan and Colleen McLoughlin, simply because they are already famous (for nothing in my opinion!).

There are many good fanfic writers out there and I know a lot of them have tried and failed to get published too.
