So, finally.... I'm getting to it. Finally getting free from work only to go on an extended vacation, and what with wedding thank you notes still to work on and looking for a house to buy, LJ updating is low on the priorities. But here goes, finally, with the opening sentences from various great books ( Read more... )

I've never been good with opening lines, in Quiz Bowl the only ones I could consistently grab were "Call me Ismael" and "Last night I dreamed I went to Manderly". But without cheating I think I've got six. Well, 5 1/2:

3) The Lord of the Rings

4) Peter Pan

7) The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

12) Atlas Shrugged. Or it could be The Fountainhead, I've never read them and so I always get mixed up which one Galt's in.

14) Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

15) A Tale of Two Cities

Knowing our common tastes I'd bet I've read half of the others without even knowing their first lines off-hand. Still, every day I'm reminded that I don't set enough time aside for reading.

Off to a good start! All correct, though technically #4 the title is wrong. You've not gotten any of the particularly obscure ones so I'll assume you know authors for all those as well. Bonus points if you can tell me the correct title for #4 without looking it up. :)

I was going to put Peter and Wendy but I didn't know if that would count, since everyone uses Peter Pan these days.

Do I get the bonus points?

I'm sure it is a great surprise to everyone that we know many of the same books. ;)

1. The Dark is Rising

2. Assassin's Apprentice (I think--I could be wrong on which RH book, as I'm at work and they're at home and I can't check.)

3. Fellowship of the Ring

4. Peter Pan

5. Heart of Darkness

6. Game of Thrones

7. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

8. Ender's Game (*pauses to hiss at nasty homophobic OSC*)

9. Ship of Magic

10. [I looked this one up so it's apparently Ascendence, but I didn't know it on my own.]

11. Song of Solomon :) :)

12. Atlast Shrugged

13. I can only imagine it's by Snoopy. ;)

14. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

15. A Tale of Two Cities

Good to see you posting. ;) Gonna be at the GH ren faire at all?

Nice. 13/15 is damn good. I'm curious if anyone can get 13... it's not actually by Snoopy, though it could be that Snoopy uses a pen name...

As to Ren Faire, we'll be there, but currently are trying to figure out which day. Won't get to do the overnight thing, as we have events each weekend. Possibly this Sunday.

Yeah, and don't forget OSC votes for Bush too. For such a damn good writer, he's frustratingly blind to some realities.

The answer to 13, for anyone interested:

Madeline L'Engle's 'A Wrinkle In Time'

Should be underlined instead of quotes but I don't know how to do that or italics and I'm too lazy to go figure it out right now. :)
