I also shamelessly use positive reinforcement on housemates - works very well on maharetr, less so on ascetic_hedony.
Interesting. I've found it seems to work better on women than men, but my sample size isn't large enough to draw any conclusions.
It has totally backfired on me a few times with men, when they appear to decide that if I see fit to praise, they've been doing the thing better than necessary, and immediately drop back to a lower level!
I've been pondering and I think the difference between housemates is more that maharetr wants the same things as me.
Gawd, that's an irritating backfire - the theory that at 'happy employee is a productive employee' is not entirely accurate - there also has to be engagement and urgency.
