He woke her up at dawn again.

“Cosette?”

She wrapped herself in a shawl and came to her door. “I’m awake.”

He turned the key and opened it; he was completely dressed. The skin beneath his eyes looked more pronounced and darker than usual, as thought he had been up all night.

“What is it, Inspector?”

“I was wondering if you would walk
