Hey, smilebackwards, I got your card! International post always cheers me up, thank you :) With regards to your questions: come visit!; and Psych, maybe? I need a new fandom icon ;)

This, from the Guardian comment section, but it's more sane than normal, I promise. "2009 will be the year of the War on t'Internet, folks. Pick a side, and stand by your mouse." ( Read more... )

Do you ever feel guilty about reading/writing/enjoying the fannish things you enjoy? Like, do you ever feel maybe you should be more critical of the texts, or of your own writing? (I'm jumping off miriam-heddy's post here.)

Sorry my question's not a happier one!

:) Whoa. Well, that's a good question, but I may ramble somewhat in my answer.

Short answer: yes, all the time, for both.

Long answer: lately, I've been watching Merlin, Entourage, and Psych. I'll get to Psych in a minute, but Merlin is the one we're kerfuffling about at the moment, and Entourage has a bunch of men with women flitting in and out of their lives mostly without leaving an impression. One character, the writer has acknowledged will never be given a name, so she's just 'Mrs Ari'. And as someone who considers herself a liberal feminist (humanist, whatever), sometimes I'm a little horrified with myself. I guess I should be more horrified with the way it doesn't stop meI know Entourage is sexist, and Merlin is. Psych I think the problem is more that there's been some assertions of racism in the fandom rather than the text - the main pairing is the less obvious white lead/white antagonist, rather than white lead/black BFF. And I sway from one extreme to the other in my response to these problems. Sometimes I just ignore all ( ... )

Sorry for the late comment on this, my computer totally crashed and I've spent the last few days trying to get it working again.

I'm glad the card finally made it! I didn't get yours yet, but the mail at my apartment is notoriously unreliable. I will try to work Oxford into my trip planning :)

Ooh, pretty icons. How do you have so much available space? My journal only supports 10 which is kind of sad. Probably because I've got a basic account though.
