People and places were easy things to leave, as long as you could leave parts of yourself with them, along the way. The new self didn’t care.
I loved it--Sam's life, in the forest, and Toby trying to piece it all together, and his reaction to Sam's books (the one that failed and the one that's probably going to be a success).
Too many wonderful lines to quote, but this Back when Sam was the token atheist on staff, but wielded the word ‘wrong’ like a flaming sword. is pretty much perfect.
Thanks for sharing!

Some people will deny nothing so quickly as that another is in love with them. Love holds the universal horror of making us both responsible for another’s feelings, and vulnerable in our own.
- “Season of Light and Darkness” - S.N. Seaborn
What a great insight.
Molly stole the phone back, to make her request for a book dedication. Toby watched the smile creep onto Sam’s face and hover at his lips. “Sure.”
“Sam. She’ll remember,” Toby warned.
“Not this next one, because it’s a little old for you. But I’m writing a story for an anthology - do you know what that is? Good - and I would be honoured to make it for you, Molly.”Honesty and intentionality and integrity and not making promises you can't keep are huge Issues for me, so I loved this bit a lot ( ... )

And I'm glad you liked the bit with Sam&Molly, because it wasn't really meant to be there, but they demanded talking time. Especially with not making promises you can't keep, because I can see that being a thing with Sam.
Thank you for the feedback :)

The dynamic between Sam and Toby works really well and the whole hermit like existence (except not) and Toby reading Sam's novel. I got a little bit lost in what had happened with Sam leaving, but I'm probably just being slow. I didn't like the scandal hitting Santos like that, but that's because I like him and it would be such a major thing.

I think Sam's leaving is partially deliberately ambiguous, but also ended up possibly more so than I intended, so I wouldn't say you're being slow. It's tied up with what happened to Toby (my own cann on that issue) and then Santos. Who yes, I will admit, was probably exploited as plot a little here! I like him, truly, but I did think that scene left enough room to use it this way, and I wanted to write Sam outside DC.
But I'm glad you liked the rest, and thanks for coming and saying so :)
