Design is fun, plaster and lath is not.

I'm being a perfectionist and it's really driving me mad how long it's taking.

The shelves are going up in the hallway.  Sure I could have bought white laminate, but I don't want particleboard or plastic if I can help it.  Aside from the processing of the stuff, I don't want the extra weight and I want to be able to screw into it without fear of it ( Read more... )

Considering your condition the phrase "I had to screw 18 times before I found a stud" makes me so proud of Steve. Since it is bold it was the first thing I saw and read.

I don't supposed now would be a good time to mention they make electric stud finders. 18 inches sounds like a lot. I thought it was between 14 or 16 as well. Ah, the joy of old homes. I have no idea what's lurking behind my plaster.

Apparently stud finders are useless in lathe & plaster. The walls are too dense. More reliable is to use a metal detector to i.d. where the lathe is nailed to the stud, but I'm nt spendking the $ on that.

When we renovated the rowhouse on 10th Street we found studs at all sorts of interesting intervals with some simply missing. Also to complicae matters, studs back then were often true 2" x 4" not like today's 2x4s that are actually 1 3/4" wide

I can only imagine. I'm afraid to look behind my walls. I won't let Frank hang anything. :)
