I saw a great comment made in response to one of these "parents" screaming about this issue (it was made on another forum and the initial protest was probably from a troll parroting Glenn Beck and Ann Coulter):
What do you call a black man who has reached the highest public office in the US?
You call him Mr. President, you racist.
That pretty much sums up my opinion on this whole matter. That and that the words "socialist" and "communist" are being used interchangeably in a fashion to rile up the same portion of the population who feared the great communist menace of the late 70's and 80's. We needed another great "other" to fear and it's been created. It just so happens he also is black.
Might as well combine two old fears in one person.
See? It only takes thinking about this to get me all riled up and upset again. Particularly after my post the other day (which did cost me a few people on my friends' list... funny, I can listen to them rant and run their mouths like modern McCarthyists and, yet, when I express my opinion, I'm dumped from their lives).
I also believe that if you (the general "you," not you, Kate) knew me well, you wouldn't be surprised that I feel the way I do about this... If what I wrote took you by surprise then you don't know me at all...

But, you already knew that.
