There is a phrase often heard here, "gettin' above their raisin'". Have you heard this phrase? It's generally used to denote someone who was born to simple means but now, whether the individual has money or not, has presumptive "airs" of snobbery. Or they now believe themselves to be better than anyone else, especially those they were raised with.
We have a state senator here who has gotten above his raisin... I went to high school with him. He had a good mother who worked hard and died early. I will take nothing away from the struggles he endured as a teen. It had to be tough. With help, he went through medical school. He's an admittedly hot guy who is still single. Because of that he's done well for himself. Now, he believes himself to be a politican.
Problem is, politicans often make laws and policies to promote their own image and not sanity.
Our high schools can no longer sell soft drinks. Now, that in and of itself has been debated for years. I find it extremely ironic, however, that recruiters can come onto campus and talk students into signing up for the service, that we can teach gun courses and help them learn to shoot and that we take them and put them behind the wheel of a car for drivers ed but they aren't mature enough to buy a bottle of pop. Okay. Whatever..
But our legislature, led by my former classmate, has taken "health consciousness" to a new level of absurity. We can no longer bring cupcakes for the rare class party unless they are individually wrapped. We can also no longer have pizzas delivered for special occassions. We must go pick them up. Why, you ask? Because (please hear a really hicky voice when you read this because it's ignorant as all giddy up) if terrorists were gonna het us they'd do it through our food supplies an' we hafta safeguard our kids!
Yes, I'm sure Al Qaida is working at Gino's Pizza just waiting for the right moment to attack a second grade class....
God save us from ourselves.
