sweeeeet!

You really make me miss my gardens. I was fortunate enough to have decent sized gardens in various places (sun, shade, away from the cattle ....) and I miss the therapy of canning and processing my own stuff.

I don't miss the time it took - but I do miss the peace and satisfaction of working in the dirt.

They do! W got a huge stinky truckload last year (2009). He DID say it was a PITA to get out of the dumpster, but that it really helped fortify the garden.

Also, we're already talking 2011 garden talk, too. No more peppers we don't eat, adding fingerling taters, more lettuces --staggered-, and a better management of mater placement to max the sunny areas. Also, a definite fall planting of spinach, kale, and edible pumpkins & squarshes. ;)

ALL THE FANCIEST GARDENERS USE ELEPHANT POO.

I SO wish I enjoyed gardening so I could marry it with my love of canning. Maybe I need to find someone who wants to garden but doesn't have a piece of land...cause that I have.

If you can get any leaves out there to cover the beds for now it will really improve the soil over the winter...if not leaves cardboard and / or black/white newsprint laid on the surface and weighted with rocks is also helpful.

I've really appreciated the tip on growveg.com from you. It organized my brain.

My goal is to get very early spring crops in on time.

I'm asking for a tall fense for Christmas, lol.

any early crops in particular? I'm thinking of putting sweetpeas in half the beds and early potatoes in the other. :)

K, looking back on my growveg stuff from 2010. I had a lot of success with early stuff. I'm just north of DC.

Early March was lettuce, Brussels Sprouts and onions. Mid March was your early potatoes, mache, fava beans, broccoli (and all that family), carrots, kale, turnips, peas, (regular and sugar snap) radish and spinach. Also Borage, fenugreek, chervil and garlic chives.

I didn't actually grow mache.

I love the idea of sweet peas. I planted cheap bagged tulip bulbs in the veggie garden this fall for cut flowers in 2011. I also left some carrots in the ground to flower in 2011 for the beneficial insects.

I'm up for some seed sharing. I have tons and I'd love to share.
