Yesterday between my therapists appointment at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. I re-read the novel Less Than Zero (which I first read in high school) in its entirety. I am now extremely depressed. While the drugs, promiscuity, prostitution and snuff films the book touches upon are pretty removed from my life the sense of anxiety and alienation at the ( Read more... )

Lemony Snicket was the first author in English I ever read, mostly out of necessity (they published the first six books in Spanish, but didn't bother with the rest of the series).

I thought it was really cool, but it gets a bit repetitive at times, but Snicket's narration compensates that at bit, plus all the adult winks and references (I doubt many YA books have references to, say, David Cronenberg films and Thomas Pynchon books) and clever games and puns.

I have been reading lately a P.G. Wodehouse book to relax myself, there's something that induces calm on silly situations in the self-contained world of British high class in the 30's, it's like... you know they are never really in danger nor dispair and that Jeeves will always solve everything at the end. (Though I swear Jeeves is emblezzing the Woosters under the table).

If you can catch the TV series "Jeeves and Wooster" with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, it is well worth watching. It captures PG> Wodehouse's whimsy quite well.

There are a lot of episodes in Youtube, I will try to watch them when I find myself with more free time.

...although Tristan, at age 8, said we couldn't read the Lemony Snicket books aloud because they were too sad. Maybe you should move to something a little more comforting. I recommend The Finn Family Moomintroll.

Aren't some of the Moomin stories kind of sad, too?

I've never heard of those, I'll have to look them up. Thanks for the recommendation.
