A few final thoughts on the election.

A lot of people, including myself, have very high hopes for the Obama presidency but it’s important to keep in mind that there are going to be limitations to what he himself can do.

Absolutely. I am optimistic, but with a BIG side of realistic. Obama can't make everything right, partly because some things are impossible to right in the current climate, and partly because there are some things that he's NOT going to feel the same way as I do about.

Really big OH THANK THE GODS, but side salad of DON'T BE UNREASONABLE WITH EXPECTATION.

Congratulations on getting a more-sensible leader rather than a less-sensible one.

Now if only there were much hope of my country doing the same. Sadly, it's not looking likely.

One of my friends is annoyingly right wing. He also considers Chicago his home; he grew up in Glen Ellen. I've been so tempted to send him an e-mail like this:

Subject: your hometown hero

Dear R,

Congratulations! The Cubs still haven't won the World Series, but at least someone from Chicago won the election.

The back-up magazine cover made me laugh loudly enough that I startled Shelly, who had been purring in her kitty-bed, and I almost started coughing trying not to laugh so loud that I would wake up my wife.
