My dear sweet brother Miki,
I know that you think I am fallen and perverse. Since leaving Ohtori Academy I’ve done my best to prove you right. I have deliberately sought out the most decadent circumstances and the worst company.
I have become the lover of a dangerous older woman.
How dangerous? Well several years ago, she very nearly destroyed the world. She unleashed dragons to tear the world apart. Do you remember the earthquakes in 1999? I know you do, because they interfered with your Schubert recital. Those earthquakes were her doing.
Her name is Kanoe, she’s a bit of a witch. Her hair coils around me like snakes. She can walk in dreams. I’ve let her in mine, what games we play (but perhaps you know, perhaps you’ve dreamed along with us-do you remember how we used to take baths together when we were small, dear brother?)
Funny thing, Kanoe told me she used to have a sister, a magical, sparkly sister of wondrous power and virtue. Her name was Hinoto. She was a princess, not a witch. She was like a pure white light. Compared to that, what could Kanoe be but her dark half? In the face of such luminosity how could she be anything but dirty?
I think Kanoe and I understand each other very well. She and I are kindred in a way that you and I will never be. We are brother and sister but we have made ourselves the opposites of each other. She and I, we are both bad sisters.
I think it is good siblings that make bad sisters.
I remember our time at school. How your judgment weighed on me like chains. You were so good at everything I could never be good enough, not if I wished to remain myself. You would have accepted me in your life, but only on your terms, only as a prisoner of your sunlit garden.
Have you ever heard of Fenris, the great wolf of Norse mythology? Fenris was considered a monster and for long years kept chained. Just as you always condemned and chained me because I had a wildness in my heart that frightened you. When the time came for Rangarok, the end of the world, the trickster Loki set Fenris free and the wolf consumed the sun.
Now that I am free, perhaps I too will consume the sun.
Then my dearest brother, your garden will be dark.
