Cholesterol

I went to the doctor the other day. He says that if my cholesterol does not come down within the next six months that he will have to put me on some sort of medication like Lipitor. I can't say that I was too surprised. High cholesterol runs in my family and up until recently, I have not been watching what I eat. There's a long list of things ( Read more... )

Hate to hear about this. I eat a lot of chicken myself. I'm not aware that I have any kind of imbalance, but I like eating a variety of things. I love steak, but I only have it once every couple of months. It seems almost every meal I have has chicken in it in some way. I eat practically every meal out.

I'm sure once you get your numbers down some, you can have lean steak (filet!) every now and then. :)

Shrimp and lobster apparently have high amounts of cholesterol. You can switch to Smart Balance spread for butter. Try eating some healthy fats, too, like avacado, olive oil, and nuts. It's supposed to help your good cholesterol count. Also, oatmeal and other hearty grains are supposed to be helpful at lowering cholesterol. Also, a good rule to follow in general is to eat foods that are as close to their natural form as possible (ie, apple instead of apple juice, chicken breast instead of chicken fingers, etc.).

Ah, that's a good rule about the natural form. I will definitely keep that in mind. I have already been eating a lot of fruits. I've given up on coffee (lots of sugar) and sodas completely. I've also started eating grain cereals with adding wheat germ. Oh, and plenty of fish oil dietary supplements. I've been losing weight, too!

I'm trying to do a cholesterol diet too. Basically, bad cholesterol is in animal products - meat, eggs, dairy, etc. One way to combat this is to eat a lot of veggies. Plant sterols can actually remove bad cholesterol.

My good cholesterol was low too, so I've been eating a lot of avacado, olive oil, etc. Your fish oil pills should help that.

Sometimes diet won't do much if you are just genetically screwed. Maybe Lipitor wouldn't be so bad, you might even be able to eat some steak :)

So what are your numbers, dude? Enquiring minds want to know.

I have a genetic problem with high triglycerides. My total cholesterol is usually around 170 but my triglycerides were WAY high last time--like around 400. Niacin is supposed to help with that, so I take a supplement every day. I also used to have too low of an HDL, so now I take fish oil pills and flax seed oil pills and I'm hoping the next time I get checked I will be A-okay in those areas.

Well, I'm already on the fish pills, which I hear is supposed to help. My weight is currently fluctuating between 150 and 155. I actually picked up some Niacin last time I was at Sam's, but I've heard bad things about it. It also says to consult a doctor before taking. What is your impression of Niacin?
