Sure - first, download the errata, and Auspicious Beginnings, where I give a fair bit of advice anyway.

Secondly, remember that the heroes are known in the Wulin - a starting character has already achieved a number of deeds to get from Rank 5 to Rank 4. NPCs should be doing the "Ah! A name long known to me" thing, even if it's just because an advisor whispered the name to them five seconds ago :)

Be careful with unarmed styles - the game includes Weapons in the name for a reason, so make sure anyone planning to go unarmed has a plan, even if that plan is "God-Weapon Gauntlets". The Companion has some really nifty stuff that helps unarmed a lot, but it's not readily available.

I like to give my players some extra destiny to spend on Lore sheets.

Fights with equals should get rarer but more important as you go along (generally fights actually become more dangerous and tactical at higher ranks - they're pretty survivable at lower ones).

Don't forget to give out Joss and Deeds!
