Two Tankas and a Haiku

Travels
I reach home daily,
to travel with my daughter
on imagined trips
to places I have been to
but never seen, with such eyes.

Better Pill
Frustrating headache,
I swallow a Saridon,
then soulful music;
my mind dissolves silently
into unexpected bliss.

Awareness

So self aware, he
understood before he sought
and thus never did.

tanka, haiku

I loved 'Awareness' to bits. What's with the fascination for haikus and tankas? Brevity's beautiful, yes, but it should make for painful writing?

Thank you, madame! :) Well, I have always had a thing for them. I don't think it's painful writing really though sticking to 5-7-5 and 5-7-5-7-7 takes some effort (most people these days don't, but I enjoy the rigor it forces on me). The harder part is to bring a fresh (hopefully!) perspective - usually it's the germ of an idea, then I twiddle on notepad and it comes together as something else altogether. I quite like that process even if it doesn't always result in something satisfactory.

Longer poems are much harder to write though I usually just write free verse. Those are certainly painful more often than not.
