The Scholastic covers of Harry Potter are crap. I feel very fortunate that Canada gets the Raincoast published HP books.

Oh, and I've worked at independent toy stores, and while we sold a few copies of the various HP books, it was just to get customers in/so we wouldn't have to turn away customers. We did not make any profit, as we had to discount the books, otherwise no one would buy them. Who would by them for full price when Big Box Store down the road has them at 30-50% off? (As you mentioned, the cost for the retailer to buy the book was 40-50% off the cover price, so if we sold it at 30%, we'd make very little profit, and what profit we made was eaten up by shipping fees). And what's funny is, people who buy the books (at a discount) at the independent stores think the store is actually making a profit!

Either the big box stores selling the books at large discount are making a small profit (just a couple of dollars a book), or they got a huge discount, which is not too likely. But big box stores can afford to sell a few products with little profit while independent stores can't.

Why not buy more audio-books or e-books ... less paper used that way. Less oil used shipping you the books that way too.
