First strip: this level of manipulation can only work on a Patterson. It's so transparent, birds regularly get killed crashing into it.

Second and third strips: As someone with two brothers and two sisters, I will never understand this level of interest in the relationships of a sibling. I can't remember giving one flying damn who was dating who EVER, and none of my siblings ever expressed interest in my relationships either. Because we had our own lives. We didn't confide in each other, either, because, well, why the hell would I confide in my siblings?

Fourth strip: Whatever. These two mushrooms deserve to spend the rest of their lives sitting in the $hit they created for themselves. Anthony didn't get to save Liz from the surf but because he was constantly stalking her he was there to save her from an assault. It's uber-creepy that the rescue fantasy from HS played out. You are really weird, Lynn.

The Sainted Family are the sort of people who get messianic in their efforts to convince people that the trapped funds that the Nigerian prince talks about actually exist. Liz deserves to be cheated out of her life because she is a stupid Patterson who doesn't understand social norms. Anthony deserves to go as bonkers as John does because he too thinks that independent living is something that a woman needs to be rescued from.

As for the why siblings care, you have to remember that Elly decreed that Mike was co-parent when she came home from the hospital.

What Anthony is stated to see in Liz has a lot to do with the absurd back story he was assigned. It began with the baffling, melodramatic non-sequitur "You ate all my organic flax bread!" and lurches through the sort of insane soap opera that Mike might have written. The salient point is that his birth mother is every cliché about liberated women Lynn could find, his dad is Snidely Whiplash and Therese's dad stuck a shotgun in his back because they sat next to one another on the cross-town bus. He looks at Liz and sees someone relatively sane:

As he settled into the new school and started to make friends, he became more and more aware of the girl who sat in front of him in English class. Elizabeth Patterson was perky, blonde and smart. She wore glasses like he did, which for some reason felt like a bond between them, and the big blue eyes behind the lenses were alive with interest in everything and everyone around her. He liked the fact that she enjoyed school (most of the time) and wasn't ashamed to admit it, unlike most of the kids ( ... )

Since when is Liz interested in everything and everyone around her??

Also, that last paragraph reminds me way too much of guys who use the term "friendzone". I hate that. Guys who throw that word around tend to do it because they think women owe them sex.

That describes all of the cis-het men in the strip.

Also, it wouldn't do to admit that Liz is the only person stupid enough not to notice what he's doing.

And of course, the real mystery is what Elly and John see in the gormless lump of nothing. The lumpish ass we see in the strip is bad enough what with his stupidly doing the same job he did in high school, his penning his kid up in his basement and his stupid need to not grow past a middle school crush. His on-site biography is in competition with Lynn's belief that movies about geeks being the envy of the world twenty years down the line have any bearing on reality and her making a case for John and Elly marrying him if they like him so much to see which is best at making him a repellent option.

Lynn's Comments:

Lynn finally admits that she wishes people behaved in a way that made sense to her:

This is not what a guy would be likely to say but it’s what I would have wanted him to say! As the “creator” here…I could put words into people’s mouths!

Obviously, Lynn, you put all the words in all the mouths of your strip characters. 🙄

And they're all the words she wishes she could hear.

I enjoy that while she is saying her usual line that she is the character, she is not even pretending that she was trying to be a teenage boy when she was writing that dialogue. It is exceptionally honest for a Lynn's Comments.
