i think it actually requires moving to a BLANK SLATE. i felt the same way, as i am a pack rat too, and the last two places i lived i made a concerted effort to get ride of things like clothes and knick-knacks and the like... but still i have more stuff.

now that i have moved to a BLANK SLATE, i am really deciding what i want to waste my time tripping over, and if it isn't worth it, it either doesn't make it onto the BLANK SLATE at all (thrown out at the door), or it is removed from the box it came in, considered, and then thrown out and hault out immediately. i've become very no-nonsense in this respect..

i expect to be paired down considerably by the time the next life-changing event (read: stuff-merge) comes along.
