Creationism Museum Happy Funtime!

Most of you are aware that there was a bit of a debacle involving an unholy alliance formed between our Cincinnati Zoo and the Creationism Museum, wherein you could purchase one-day tickets to both "attractions" at a discounted price. The partnership was terminated by the zoo fairly quickly (Story here, link thanks to bardiphouka )

But fear not you crazy ( Read more... )

LOL, good grief. What total idiot on the Zoo's board decided that was a good idea? And from the sound of the aritcle, they were surprised when it generated an uproar.... *facepalms* I swear, this is what tempts otherwise open-minded scientists to adopt atheism.

Crazy ol world innit? Instead of just working together to make the world we live in a nice one, we gotta fight each other over how it got this way to begin with? Er... huh?

As a scientist-in-training, I can understand where some of the emnity is coming from. Creationism is bad science and bad religion. Intellectually, there's no contest and there really shouldn't BE any debate, but the followers of Creationism keep pushing the "controversy". They also tend to believe a host of other things that I loathe, which doesn't help them in my book. Yeah, it might seem a little odd to get wound up over a "theory"s lack of intellectual merit...but that's science nerds for you. Pushing an intellectually bankrupt idea counds as a mortal insult in our little, nerdy sceme of things.

Oh I'm right up there getting wound up over it. I have to avoid the subject with my own mother, who is an otherwise intelligent, generous and wonderful creature. It's the only issue I've ever raised my voice over with her (as an adult) and if I think about it too much I alternately want to scream and break down sobbing because I just.. can't understand how she ended up there.

The whole thing is depressingly ironic, ultimately I just wish it were a non-issue. Facts should be facts and okie dokie let's move on to more important things! I know that isn't the way of it, but wouldn't it be loverly?

I think that what really surprised me most was Ham's statement that many of the statements made just show how anti-Christian they are. I don't think of this as anti-Christian, I think of this as anti-fundamentalist. You have one organization that teaches above all that you should put all your faith in God, to the point where any opposition to their thought is met with statements like "anti-Christian," or worse "hateful" and on the other hand, you have a scientific organization who, you hope, would seek answers as opposed to simply putting faith into something ( ... )
