I haven't read much fanfic at all recently but I did check my Highlander collection recently so I'm very aware of your first lesson. Fortunately when I first started reading fanfic on the internet I had to pay for my access by the minute so I was in the habit of downloading fic from early on. My favourites went on floppy disks but when I changed computers I had the sense to store them on another drive and then upload them to my new computer. They have certainly travelled through some different formats, but basically I've still got most of my favourites.

It really brought it home to me how much the structure of fandom has changed in the last few years. From lots of different sites for fanfic it's now really a one stop shop with AO3 dominating as far as I'm aware. It does make finding fic much easier but I do miss some of the older fic sites and how much fun it was to find a cache of new fic.
