I read a series of these lately: The Eyre Affair, by Jasper Fforde, The Last Kashmiri Rose, by Barbara Cleverly, and The Janissary Tree, by Jason Goodman. I liked all of them, but wasn't crazy about any of them. My friend Beth loaned me The Eyre Affair, but I'm proud to say that I picked out the other two all by myself. You may not think much of it

If, that is, you're the sort of person who doesn't mind knowing that they're reading a book while they read a book. Apparently some folks just want to be transported mentally to a story-place and all the meta-cleverness ruins things for them. Me, I love it. I'm just sitting there cheering, "Go, Author, Go!"

I'm fine with meta, as long as the author is being meta with me rather than with himself, if you see what I mean. And the book has to have craft. If I can do better in my own imagination I get annoyed that some loser wrote a book and got a deal when I'm too lazy to do it!
