Hmmm...you should try reading S.M. Stirling's "Dies the Fire." It's post-apocalyptic fiction set in the Portland, OR area. One of the things me points out in the beginning of it is that after things break down, it's the people who wait for someone to help them that end up dying off, while the people who actively begin building new lives and solving their own problems are the survivors. It's an interesting read.
