I first met Ken in 1995, and ended up working with/for him in 2000, mainly on his house, but we went and did some things which Ken owed as favors. looking over this, I see there was one thing Ken told me I didn't include that made an impression on me so I've thought about it many times over the years.

about the japan stay in 1937 he said he couldn't get used to the fact that the old people simply didn't use light indoors much, even being a kid, the doors seemed weirdly low and didn't admit much light. There was one passage he went through regularly and he just ran his hand along a wooden ledge in the dark, he said "I never saw what it really looked like in there" he said the shops nearby were also dimly lit, but it had more to do with there only being windows on one side and being long narrow rooms. he said sometimes there wasn't light to see the food you were eating.
