Dudley Moore kept his illness a secret for so long that he'd fallen out of the public eye. And we all know how short a memory that can have.
He was a comedic genius and his illness took him from us much sooner than his death. Those who knew this mourned his passing.
Because who was Berle? A slapstick comic at the right place at the right time for television straight from Vaudeville, with a huge cock. That was his legacy.
'Arthur' was classic and will entertain generations.
But you are right. The most popular flavor of the moment gets the press--screw the talent or contribution.
Thanks for the clips. I recall the one-legged man sketch very well. It shows his only real weakness as a comic, that he had difficulty in keeting a straight face. :)
Her in the UK, I don't recall even Elvis Presley's death getting quite the blanket coverage in our media that Michael Jackson's received. The coverage was more reminiscent of that of the death of Princess Diana than anything else.
Dudley did finally go public about his illness and chose to do so on 20/20. At least he finally got people to stop thinking he was drunk and had turned into Arthur. Once they knew what was really going on, he got a LOT more support from people, which really comforted him when he needed it most. I wasn't aware he was sick and the time and I had been a big fan since the early 90's. I'm glad though that I didn't know what he was going through or I would have been a lot more depressed about it at the time

> Dudley was usually mentioned only in passing ...
Well, to be fair, that is what he was up to, after all. It'd be inaccurate to say he was sticking around a while longer.
