Is there a problem, officer?

OK, I went to see the new "Star Trek" Film already - twice (this is no small thing - the last time I saw a movie twice in the theater, I'm pretty sure Bush Sr was President). And you don't need me to tell you how OMG AWESOME YEY! it was, because everyone and their dog has already told you that!

But I have one question.

Cut for spoilerness in case you haven't seen it, and if you haven't you should because OMG AWESOME YEY! )

They actually gave a barely visible establishing shot for that. The cliff wasn't a natural formation; it was an industrial-style pit where stuff had been dug out to make a huge rectangular hole in the ground. So it's where the soy beans of tomorrow are mined to make the starships of today. Or, well, of like ten years before today's story gets going, anyway.

I wondered about that myself. They don't mine in Iowa so they don't have quarries,. But this is Sci Fi....Soooooooooo.

A tool mark from the Lathe of Heaven (from when they built the Table Leg of the Gods).

It's Iowa, so it may be the foundation for the still uncompleted Radar O'Reilly Memorial (stretches from Ottumwa to Ames).
