Exterminators don't work. Cockroaches that survive extermination (by scattering to another part of the building) come back, and are able to develop an immunity to a particular poision after a couple of generations (so, after about 2 months, they won't be killed by the poision that your building's resident exterminator has been using for 10 years).
The only thing that has ever worked for me is boric acid. It's a non-toxic powder (but wear a mask -- you shouldn't breathe it in). You brush an extremely thing layer into holes in the wall (say, where the plumbing is) and between the floor and wall -- and in about a week or two, your roaches will be dead. It costs about $2 for a big bottle of it, and you can get it at Lowe's. As long as it doesn't get wet or brushed away, it lasts forever!
