We visited a whole series of fortresses during our trip. This one was probably the smallest, most remote and least commercial one we visited. It was also the most interesting.
Not only were we able to go inside, but we had complete and unhindered access. There wasn't even anyone there collecting an admission fee. Actually, the only other peolpe we saw the whole time was a family with one child who was leaving when we came and a group of three kids from the village who probably saw us approach the fortress and came along because our presence was a curiosity.
The rule of thumb for us with our fortress visits this spring was that the more they charged, the less interesting they turned out to be.
This fortress was particularly interesting because it was out in the middle of nowhere. The views from it were of the countryside which left the imagination to wander back in time.
I will post more information about where this is ... a little bit later.
I think that I will put together a flickr collection of fortress highlights.
Thanks for the response ... but no, not Jajce. We also did visit the fortress "Castel" there, and had a wonderful time. I will contine to post pictures from our trip, and we have a lot of nice shots from Jajce. We underestimated how interesting our stop there would be. Up until this trip, I only knew Jajce from the stop at the bus station. The way the bus travels, my memories of Jajce are dominated by images of the factory with four smoke stacks billowing out smoke ... and the furnace flames that you can see from quite an impressive (disturbing) distance. Who would have known that so much of interest was hiding just beyond the smoke stacks???
This fortress was the one (of a total of six we visited this year) that was geographically the farthest away from Jajce.
Thanks for the comment!bih_friendJune 11 2007, 11:41:06 UTC
Having been in Europe for so long, it has become hard to imagine having never been to a fortress. This year's trip included visits to six different fortresses. There are others that we saw in BiH last year and ones that we have yet to see.
Oh ... and when we look out from our terrace here at home, one of the highlights is our view of the local fortress.

Now, I am curious. Since you responded anonymously, I don't know who has the good Bosnian Fortress knowledge.
Will THIS mystery be solved??
