Three things:

1. Read the novel. It's good. Trust me.
2. I call it soccer just as often - probably more often - than football. This is because American football is my favorite sport. On occasion, I have referred to soccer as "the football," but seldom as "football." Are we all clear now? Great. :-) (Hey, an Anglophile I may be, but let's not diminish my love for the game with the helmets and the oblong ball here.)
3. Despite the fact I follow Arsenal, I've never seen this movie all the way through. Only bits and pieces. I like the recommendation though.

It's not the best film evararararar-cubed as you so eloquently put it, but it really is good. Don't bother with the Americanized one; it's a fucking abomination.

You definitely need to read the book, though. I don't even like Arsenal and I probably read it twice a year.
