Scotty/Uhura: Why it's completely, ahem, logical

Yes, I am doing het meta now. Someone note this date, because it may never happen again. :D

But seriously, about a week ago I was sitting around in a meditative trance, thinking about pairings in Star Trek and I started thinking about Scotty/Uhura and really thought about how it could work and actually be a valid pairing. Heck, if you'd ask me a ( Read more... )

I completely agree with everything you said, especially the part where rebootSpock is not good enough for rebootUhura.
Everytime I talk about it, people seem not to understand that the point is not that I don't like the pair, the point is that Spock and Uhura share a very unbalanced kind of relationships in which Spock - though highly matched to her from a solely intellectual point of view - tends to drag Uhura down in the emotional department.
When I rewatched the reboot movie after I watched the whole original series for the first time, the first thing that came up to mind about Uhura was something on the line of "gee, why is she so uptight?". tosUhura was both highly intelligent and highly passional, so I couldn't understand why rebootUhura acted like she had just swallowed a broomstick, then it came up to mind that the only relevant difference with her tos counterpart was that she was Spock's girlfriend and it was easy to make the consequential math.

I suppose we won't know if Uhura will forever be an uptight unfunny person or if in the next movie we'll see it as a fluke. I like what you said there, that when you do the math and realize the only difference is Spock and Uhura dating, it gets really simple. That and different writers, but like I said, we won't be able to judge completely until the next movie.

I'm quite excited for the next movie just to see how they pull the whole thing off.
Also because I want to understand if Spock acting OOC was caused by the load of emotional stress he was put under (loosing one's planet and beloved mother at the same time would be hard on anyone) or if they sincerily did not get the whole point of Spock as a character, and they don't understand that he is a Vulcan-human hybrid rather than a repressed human.

I love your thoughts on Spocks influence on Uhura in reboot. In my mind I just put it down to bad writing of female charactors which is a big problem in Hollywood. It seems that a lot of the time, if a female is supposed to be kickass, she's always a little bitchy as well.

I reallyreally want to like reboot!Uhura more, because in TOS she was kickass, but also fun, bubbly and nice.

It may still be bad female writing and this is just me giving it a good excuse. And I totally hate that fact, that for a woman to be strong and independent, she must be a ball crusher. It's little wonder that I hate 90% of women in media, simply because no one writes them correctly.

I so loved TOS Uhura. Heck, I didn't mind Kirk/Uhura and really if it wasn't for that buzzkill of a scene where her flirting flies over head and she thinks he doesn't care if the captain might be dead, I'd be fine with Spock/Uhura.

YOU OWN MY HEART!
I so agree with everything you are saying, and I would love to have a guy like scotty *_*/

while spirk is for hottnes, scotty/uhura is a female dream of a man who respects you and loves you for who you are

I'm telling you, a girl would never get bored around Scotty unless you got him talking about engineering. :)

I like that, loving someone for who you are. I of course think Kirk/Spock is about that too, but that message isn't as clear as the message HOLY HELL, THIS SHIT IS HOT.

I keep wanting to write fic where Scotty and Uhura geek out over upgrading the Universal Translator or something ^.^ I never noticed that after dating Spock, Uhura is more muted than before. I keep thinking of ways that their relationship started, namely on an intellectual level like you said, but I don't see how they could stay together unless each they get a big character overhaul (and it would probably be Uhura who gets it).

Little nitpick: I think you meant ka'athyra instead of lirpa.

That would be an adorable fic; write it. :P

Oh dear, I said lirpa? *facepalm* I KNOW that's a weapon, but I never knew the Vulcan harp was called that.

I agree. Mostly. I have Uhura paired with Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, Spock and no one at all and still be awesome. I've read stories for all of the above and accepted for the most part how versatile Uhura is. (That sounds weird...) ken_ichijouji has written a wonderful series called the Waterpark'verse where Uhura and Spock became an "OTP- O= TP" for me. I haven't read any other story where Uhura/Spock works. Mostly for the reasons you listed.

When I watched the movies, I loved the canon Scotty/Uhura so I think I favor that more in general. Rec: The Honourable Thing by baby-razzle Excellent Scotty/Uhura and Kirk/Spock!
