On fanmixes

I never know what to do with fanmix album art. You know, the little picture of the album that pops up when you have a song pop up on most players/mp3 players? I was thinking about what to do for my next fanmix and I always wonder how the majority feels on the issue. I mean, I personally don't care either way, except I hate when fanmixes have ( Read more... )

i usually don't care if art is shit. Good art is a plus of course, but is not mandatory. Songs are more important - whether i like the lyrics, tune. and of course files format, mp3, plz?=)
as for downloading all songs in one file - it's far easier to download all of them and then just delete one by one if you don't like some of them.

Definitely like all the songs in one format, even if it's not .mp3. Then I don't have to use one or two different media players because I prefer windows media player. And I'm with you on putting them into one file. First of all it's just easier, and I know if I were to pick and choose songs myself, I wouldn't choose odd-looking ones and I'd deprive myself of potential good music. :D

i'm mostly on the side of yay!freemusic! but it's always nice if someone's put the effort into the art and i tend to remember the nice art after even if the music sucks but that might just be me. also, i have no idea what the min/max is or if there even is one. i've only ever made a mix for a fic once and i did the .zip thing

I also think it's pretty nice when you have obscure songs like I tend to have and there is no original album art. Or if one of the songs is from the Twilight soundtrack and you don't want that album artwork besmirching the good name of your mix. :P

I just always wondered when too much was too much, you know? I think at least five or six songs should in a fanmix, but for me if it has between 10-15 songs, that's perfect. Maybe if it's more than 20, that's pushing it. I suppose if you can't burn all the songs onto a normal CD, then you know you have too many.

I don't care about the art, just the music. Sometimes it pisses me off when it reads like all the music was just taken from the Top 20 charts though.

I've used box.net and it's awesome. <3333

Ooh yeah, I know what you mean. I mean there's also the other extreme which is all the songs being from obscure bands I've never heard of and, frankly, being from bands I don't want to have ever heard of, but I've found a shitload of new bands via fanmixes and it's always nice when there's a nice mix of songs I've heard of and obscurity.

I've used box.net too and I do like it. For one, you can preview songs, and they're a permanent link. I personally use it on different mixes, depending on what kind of mix it is. If it's a crack mix or if it's a small mix I tend to go with box.net and a zip download, but if it's something like the one I'm making for my fic which has 20 songs and if I choose to go through the extra work of assigning custom album covers for each track, then I'd be lazy and choose the download all option. :)

I think the biggest issue is what you mentioned with the different file formats; that's really something I think needs to be all the same, or at least keep it to mp3 and wav so everyone can play it on whatever media player.

The only fanmix I've ever downloaded is lama_mama's "Typically Me" one for Kirk, and that's basically my full experience with fanmixes. In general, I like them. I wasn't a Britney fan before the Kirk fanmix, and now I can't listen to her music without going all ^.^ and thinking of the guy (man, 'Trek fandom is making me like Britney Spears, Kesha, and mpreg; what's next on the list?). I think that as long as everything fits together (the album art, the songs, the overall concept, etc.), then a fanmix is worth doing. As to what determines if everything "fits together"... well, I guess that's up to interpretation.

Is it better to include all files in one zip or use something like box.net to let people download individual songs? Just wondering. :)Personally, I like everything to be included in one zip. I'm horrible at keeping things organized/organizing things in the first place, so this really helps me out. But I also think it's a good idea to let people download individual songs: someone might already have one of the songs and not ( ... )
